About the Summit
Shaping Nigeria’s Orange Economy
The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) is a high-level centre of reflection, research and dialogue, where academics of intellectual excellence, policy initiators and executors, and citizens with substantial practical experience, drawn from different sectors of national life, meet to reflect and exchange ideas on the great issues of society.
In furtherance of that mandate, and as part of its commitment to structuring the Orange Economy for greater productivity and job creation, NIPSS is convening the National Summit and Exhibition on the Orange Economy.
The Orange Economy refers to the cluster of creative and cultural industries whose value derives from ideas, talent and intellectual property, including music, film, fashion, publishing, visual and performing arts, gaming, advertising and design.
For Nigeria, home to Nollywood, a globally influential music industry, and a fast-growing fashion and content-creation ecosystem, the creative economy is widely seen as one of the country’s most promising, and still under-structured, sources of non-oil growth and youth employment.
Read the full backgroundWhy the Orange Economy Matters
01
Job Creation
Creative and cultural industries carry significant potential for employment and entrepreneurship, particularly for young Nigerians, relative to the capital they require.
02
Global Competitiveness
Nigerian film, music, fashion and content already travel. Structured support can convert that influence into durable exports and international market share.
03
Intellectual Property
Value in the Orange Economy derives from ideas, talent and intellectual property. Rights administration and protection are therefore central to sector growth.
04
National Development
A structured creative economy strengthens economic diversification, non-oil growth and Nigeria’s broader national development agenda.
